In this session, Riham Refay will share a strategic vision for improving environmental sustainability in Egyptian museums. Her approach focuses both on reducing the carbon footprint of these institutions and on enhancing public environmental awareness. She will present practical measures such as the use of renewable energy, more efficient waste and water management, and better indoor environmental quality, while also discussing how museums can become active agents of change—by embedding environmental topics into exhibitions and educational programs, and by encouraging communities to engage with sustainability on a personal level.

About the Speaker
Riham Refay is a curator at the Graeco-Roman Museum in Alexandria and the founder of the "Towards Green Museums in Egypt" initiative. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Greek and Latin Studies and holds a Master's degree in Greek and Roman Archaeology from Alexandria University. A certified Sustainable Development Ambassador and Trainer, she regularly lectures on sustainable development and Egypt’s Vision 2030 at Alexandria University.
Her work centers on integrating sustainability principles into museum practices and activating the role of museums in promoting a culture of sustainability. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences on museums, archaeology, and sustainability.

Am Freitag, den 20. Juni 2025 lädt das GreenMuseumHub herzlich zur Tea & Coffee Lecture mit Stefanie Dowidat, zertifizierte Transformationsmanagerin für nachhaltige Museen und erfahrene Ausstellungsgestalterin, ein. Sie wird den kürzlich erschienenen Leitfaden „Nachhaltig Ausstellen“ vorstellen, der von der Landesstelle für Museumswesen Baden-Württemberg veröffentlicht wurde.
Der Vortrag stellt sowohl den Leitfaden als auch sein ergänzendes Instrument, die Bewertungsmatrix, vor - ein digitales Selbstbewertungssystem, das es Museen ermöglicht, die Nachhaltigkeit ihrer Ausstellungspraxis in allen Projektphasen systematisch zu bewerten und zu quantifizieren.

Themen sind u.a. der Klimaschutzleitfaden, Mindeststandards für Museen, Empfehlungen für die Einrichtung eines climate corridors und Pläne für ein bevorstehendes Zertifizierungsprogramm für nachhaltige Museen, das voraussichtlich Ende nächsten Jahres eingeführt werden soll.

What is fair enough? Museums on their way to Sustainability
Museums should increasingly act towards the future in terms of sustainability towards their collections and exhibitions, visitors and employees. As institutions, they are caught between the preservation of traditions and the development of an institution that acts fairly and participatively, both internally and externally. Museums must therefore increasingly deal with questions of social responsibility. In this context, philosophical theories of justice can offer valuable perspectives as they help to understand museums not only as places of cultural heritage but also as institutions of social and cultural transformation. By placing (distributive) justice at the heart of their work, museums can contribute to a more just and inclusive society, Alice Schröder-Klaassen says.

The host is the DAAD project "GreenMuseumHub: Sustainable Futures for Museums and Heritage Sites" of Helwan University in Cairo (Egypt), Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (Germany), and Université de la Manouba (Tunisia). As part of the project, several Tea & Coffee Lectures are held each year to collectively approach the topic of "Sustainability."
